Three buttons.
Zero menu-diving.

Live looping dies the second you're hunting through menus mid-song. Spool's whole transport is three big buttons — and each one does exactly what a working looper's foot expects.

🔴 Red — Record

Record & overdub

One tap does the right thing. Empty track? It records. Got a take? It finishes it. Loop stopped? It plays and overdubs in a single tap. Already playing? You're layering. No modes to check, no state to remember — your foot already knows.

🟢 Green — Play

Play-only · Hands off your take

Green never touches your recording. It finishes an overdub and keeps playing, restarts a stopped loop in sync from the top — and if the loop's already playing, it politely does nothing. The safe button. The "just play it back" button.

Stop

Tap = end of loop · Double-tap = now

A single tap lets the loop finish its cycle, then stops — clean, musical, no guillotine. Need it dead right now? Double-tap. Two endings, one button, zero thought required on stage.

Count-in

A proper count-in before the first take, so bar one lands where bar one belongs.

Threshold recording

Arm it, and recording starts the instant you play — not the instant you fumble for a button. Silence before your first note gets trimmed, so the loop starts on the note.

Tap tempo

Tap the tempo in, or let Spool follow your first loop. The grid locks to you — never the other way around.

02The mini-demo

Don't take our word for it —
play with it right now.

A taste of the real engine, synthesized live in your browser. Hit the pads, start the groove, then drag on the filter pad while it plays. That's Spool in miniature.

Spool · Pocket groove · 120 BPM
FILTER 7.2 kHz RESONANCE 6.0 X = CUTOFF · Y = BITE

Pads work with touch, mouse, or keys A S D F. Everything you hear is synthesized on the spot — no audio files, just like the full app's synth engine.

03The seamless engine

No clicks. No drift.
No mercy.

A loop that pops at the seam isn't a loop — it's a reminder. Spool's engine is built the way the hardware loopers do it: smooth the splice, kill the latency, and give the mix so much headroom it can't clip.

7ms

Equal-power crossfade

At every loop wrap, the tail fades out while the head fades in underneath it — an equal-power curve, so the seam is completely inaudible. Takes, overdubs, punch-ins, reversed and half-speed playback: no pops, ever.

0ms

Latency, compensated

Spool measures your device's real round-trip latency and shifts every take earlier by exactly that much. What you played lands where you played it — not a few milliseconds late and sluggish.

32-bit

Float mixing + limiter

Everything mixes in 32-bit float, with a safety limiter as the last stage before your speakers. Stack overdub on overdub on overdub — it saturates gracefully instead of crunching. What you export to WAV is what you heard.

04Sounds

Real instruments,
not placeholders.

No synthesized "drum-ish" noises, no one-note piano stretched across the keyboard. Spool ships with real recorded instruments — and any pad can wear any sound.

152

Real drum samples · 10 kits

Kicks, snares, claps, snaps, hats, toms, crashes, rides, cowbell, shakers — 152 real studio recordings wired into the drum engine, organized into ten kits that genuinely sound different from each other. Edit mode lets you put any of the 152 on any pad.

C5

Grand Piano

A multisampled Yamaha C5 grand — real notes across the full range, not one sample pitch-bent into submission. Plus the Vintage Upright: a characterful old piano with its quirks left in, because quirks are the good part.

12×2

Synth keys & chord bank

Synth key patches for the electronic side, and a chord bank covering all 12 keys, major and minor — diatonic chords and 7ths played with an 18 ms strum, through the same keys engine. Pick a key, tap a chord, sound like you practiced.

05Performance widgets

The Toolbox.
Built for the stage.

Premium unlocks Spool's performance toolkit — the tools you reach for mid-song when the loop needs to go somewhere.

The Scene Launcher widget in Spool

Scene launcher

Save named snapshots of your whole setup and recall them with one tap — a real 500 ms crossfade between song sections, not a hard cut.

The Stutter Pad widget in Spool

Stutter pad

Hold it and the loop chops into beat-quantized repeats — 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32. Release lands back on the beat like nothing happened.

The Tape Age widget in Spool, showing all eight loops from Fresh to Ancient

Tape age

Every overdub wears your loop like analog tape: saturation, wow and flutter, a breath of hiss. Loops earn badges — Fresh, Worn, Vintage, Ancient. Fresh tape is one tap away.

The Loop Slicer widget in Spool

Loop slicer

Chop any recorded loop into 6 or 12 sample-accurate slices and play them as pads — reorder the take without re-recording it. MIDI-triggerable, velocity and all.

The Chord Bank widget in Spool

Chord bank

Twelve keys, major and minor, diatonic chords and 7ths with a natural strum — through the grand piano, the upright, or the synths.

The Idea Capture widget in Spool

Idea capture

One tap grabs the moment — audio plus a timestamped snapshot of your whole session, restorable later. Fifty ideas deep, so nothing good evaporates.

The Tuner widget in Spool

Tuner

A real pitch tuner on your live input — note, Hz, cents needle — running YIN detection on the actual input stream.

The Key Detector widget in Spool

Key detector

Listens to your loop and names its key, then feeds it straight to the chord bank.

The Conductor Flash widget in Spool

Conductor flash

A beat light locked to the audio clock, with count-in — the whole room (or just you, out of the corner of your eye) stays on the grid.

The Macro XY Pad widget in Spool, with its morph puck and corner assignments

Macro XY pad

Four assignable parameters from a 16-parameter registry, morphed bilinearly under one finger. Sweep the whole song's character in a single gesture.

The Fade-to-Black widget in Spool

Fade-to-black

Endings that breathe: fade the whole performance out over 2, 4 or 8 bars. Changed your mind mid-fade? Tap again — it comes back.

The Speed widget in Spool

Speed & octave

Half-speed, double-speed, octave shifts — the classic looper tricks, applied per track, in time.

The Undo and Redo widget in Spool

Undo that behaves

Mistake in the last layer? Undo peels it off. Your loop underneath is never collateral damage.

06The studio

A phone-first performer.
A full studio on the big screen.

On your phone, Spool is a focused Perform tab — big buttons, no clutter. Open it on a tablet or desktop and the whole studio unfolds.

65

The Board

Sixty-five customizable performance widgets — FX, instruments, macros, meters, utilities — arranged your way. Assign widgets to specific loops with the LoopAssign picker, and what shows up on stage is exactly the rig you built.

Mixer + automation

A real mixer with per-track control, and automation you can record and play back — rides you perform once happen every pass after.

Full MIDI learn

Plug in a footswitch or controller and teach Spool your setup: MIDI learn on controls and automation, program changes included. Hands stay on the instrument.

WAV export

One tap renders your loop to a WAV file — automation included, limiter and all, so the file sounds like the performance did.

Sessions

Save and load full sessions, with autosave watching your back. Close the tab mid-song; your loops are where you left them.

08Questions

Asked, answered.

New to live looping? A music looper records a short performance and repeats it seamlessly while you layer more parts on top — the one-person-band trick behind countless solo acts. Spool is that looper, online: no pedal, no app install, just your browser. The short version of everything else people ask before their first loop:

What is Spool?
Spool is a free online music looper and live loop station that runs entirely in your browser. You record a short performance — guitar, voice, keys, anything — and Spool repeats it seamlessly while you overdub layer on layer, up to 8 loop tracks. It works like a hardware loop pedal or looper app, but with no download, no installation and no account: open the page and start looping on your phone, tablet or desktop.
Is there a free online looper I can use without installing anything?
Yes — that's exactly what Spool is. The free Starter gives you one loop track with the core FX — reverb, filter, pan and drums — plus the full seamless looping engine, with no signup, no credit card and no expiry. Premium is a one-time $29 payment that unlocks all 8 tracks and every feature.
How is Spool different from a loop pedal?
A hardware loop pedal is a single-purpose box that sits on the floor; Spool is a full loop station in your browser. You get 8 loop tracks instead of one or two, built-in drums, a sampled grand piano and chord bank, dozens of FX and performance widgets, a mixer with automation, MIDI footswitch control, session saving and WAV export — and it runs on the phone, tablet or computer you already own, at a fraction of a pedal's price.
Does the Spool looper work on phones and tablets?
Yes — Spool is phone-first. On a phone it presents a focused Perform view with big stage-friendly buttons; on a tablet or desktop the full studio opens up, including the Board with 65 customizable widgets. Because it runs in the browser, the same looper works across Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux with nothing to install.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Spool runs entirely in your browser — open the page and it works. Chrome is recommended for the best audio performance, on phone, tablet, or desktop.
How does the free Starter work?
Open Spool and you get one loop track with the core FX — reverb, filter, pan and drums — plus the full seamless engine. No signup, no card, no expiry. Locked features stay visible so you can see what Premium adds; nothing is hidden from you.
What does Premium unlock?
Everything. All 8 tracks, every FX and performance widget (scene launcher, stutter, tape age, loop slicer, tuner, key detector, macro pad…), the 65-widget Board, the mixer with automation, full MIDI learn, WAV export, and the sampled grand piano and vintage upright. One payment of $29 via Gumroad gets you a license key — paste it into Settings and you're unlocked for good.
What do I need to loop?
Anything that makes sound, plus a way to get it into your device — your phone's mic works for voice and acoustic instruments; an audio interface gives you the cleanest signal for guitar, keys, or anything with a cable.
Can I actually use it live?
That's what it's built for. MIDI footswitch control so your hands never leave the instrument, a conductor-flash cue metronome, count-in, scene recall for song sections, and an undo that peels off a bad layer without nuking the loop underneath.

Your first loop is
30 seconds away.

No download. No account. Open it, tap the red button, play something.
